Maintaining Electric Vehicles

Did you know that we also service electric vehicles (EVs) at Calgary’s Bowest Motors? Like any other vehicle, EVs require regular maintenance to ensure they run smoothly and maintain their lifespan. Here are five tips for maintaining your electric vehicle:

  1. Monitor Battery Life: One of the most critical components of an EV is the battery. To maintain your EV's battery life, it's important to avoid letting it run down to zero percent. Instead, try to keep your battery charge between 20-80 percent. This will help to maximize your battery's lifespan and maintain its overall health. If you need assistance in checking the status of your battery, you can bring it in for a diagnostics test

  2. Check and Rotate Tires: Just like with a gasoline-powered vehicle, it's important to check and rotate the tires on your EV regularly. This will help to ensure that your tires wear evenly, which can improve your vehicle's handling and fuel efficiency. Additionally, EVs are typically heavier than gas-powered cars, so it's important to make sure your tires are in good condition and properly inflated to ensure optimal performance. Ask us about special tires that are quieter and more suitable for heavier EVs - XL rated and foam lined!

  3. EVs still need suspension and alignment services! Yes, just like any other car, it’s important to make sure your alignment is in check to promote steering safety. It will also help your tires last longer, as a car out of alignment can cause significant damage to your tires.

  4. Stay on Top of Brake Maintenance: EVs use regenerative braking, which means that the brakes use the vehicle's electric motor to slow down and recharge the battery. In an EV, regenerative braking makes brakes last longer, but because the brake calipers are not used as much, we recommend an annual brake inspection to ensure everything is in working order.

  5. Regularly Service Your EV: Finally, it's important to have your EV serviced regularly by a qualified mechanic who is familiar with electric vehicles. Regular maintenance can help to identify any potential problems early on and prevent more serious issues from developing. It's also important to follow your EV manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule to ensure that your vehicle is running at its best.

Here at Bowest Motors, we’d be pleased to complete any of the above services on your electric vehicle. Since the technology is more advanced, there are certain EV parts that require advanced attention. By following these five tips, you can help to ensure that your EV runs smoothly, lasts a long time, and provides you with the reliable, efficient transportation you need.
